The Crystal. According to screenwriter Max Landis, The Crystal called MOGO (Massive Omnivorous Geodesic Organism) is one of many creatures that have existed since the Archean Age. Described as living giant crystalline rock formations similar to algae that lived off of protein within the minerals found in the lava around them and they propelled themselves through the lava surrounding the planet by using electromagnets. The MOGO are also virtually indistinguishable from other rocks until they’re dissected. As the Earths crust formed they were forced closer and closer to the Earths core and they never died out (with hundreds of millions still living near the center of the Earth). They do not need to eat much but since they are omnivorous they also eat plants and meat and do not just feed from protein found in minerals. To do this since there aren't any plants or animals near the Earths core they burrow tunnels up to the surface (usually at the bottom of the ocean) and send out a radio wave that mammals and higher life forms can hear which draws whatever animal to the MOGO and turns them into a telekinetic drone to go seek out more food for them. These drones are connected to one another and given the ability to manipulate electromagnetic fields allowing them to move anything, which in turn causes intense mental strain and nosebleeds, to aid in collecting more food for the MOGO. Max also states that almost every incidence of UFOs, supernatural and paranormal events throughout history can be tied back to the MOGO. The MOGO do not exist in the real world and only exist within the Chronicle Universe.

With the story that happens in Chronicle this did not exactly happen to Matt, Steve and Andrew. Due to the MOGO they found being very old and sick it dies during the drone making process leaving the trio with telekinesis without having to complete the feeding process which would have normally ended up with them being drones and absorbed by the MOGO at the end of its feeding process. This information would not have been revealed in Chronicle 2 but would have been in Chronicle 3 with another MOGO (who apparently killed the first MOGO in Chronicle) turning an entire town into drones leaving Matt with the task to defeat them/it.
